HPLC Separation of Cyclodextrin Sulfobutyl Ether and Hydrophobic Compound

Home HPLC Separation of Cyclodextrin Sulfobutyl Ether and Hydrophobic Compound

Description

Cyclodextrin sulfobutyl ether is a sulfonated derivative of cyclodextrin, consisting of a mixture of components with varying degrees of sulfobutylation. These compounds are highly polar and acidic, making them poorly retained on traditional reversed-phase columns.

Using the Zodiac HST N column in anion-exchange mode, effective separation of the cyclodextrin components was achieved. A hydrophobic naphthalene standard was included in the analysis as a retention reference. Due to the non-UV-active nature of the cyclodextrin species, ELSD was used for detection.

This method demonstrates the capability of the Zodiac HST N column to retain and separate highly polar and charged analytes that are otherwise difficult to analyze by conventional techniques.
