Description
The dual-mode functionality of the Zodiac HST N column enables effective retention and sharp peak shapes for strongly acidic compounds like trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). This unique stationary phase allows for straightforward UV-based quantitation and identification. Traditional reversed-phase (RP) columns provide limited retention and poor peak symmetry for TFA, especially at low concentrations of acetonitrile (ACN). To address this, sulfuric acid is often added to suppress ionization and increase the compound’s hydrophobicity. Conversely, in typical HILIC columns, phosphoric acid is used to enhance ionization and polarity to promote retention through polar interactions. However, columns lacking the mixed-mode capabilities of Zodiac HST N cannot achieve the same level of retention or separation efficiency for such analytes.
